The House Magazine

For a good few weeks our lives have been drastically changed by something microscopic. As a result, I have never been more interested in ingredients that help fight against illness. There is no better way to pack those ingredients into one meal than our Immunity Boosting Smoothie. Easy to make, pantry friendly and a recipe my whole family enjoys.

I touched on my last grocery run experience during this pandemic in an earlier blog post, but it was easy to find oranges as strange as that may sound. Orange juice was the inspiration for this recipe and thankfully we have plenty to juice for these smoothies. It’s an obvious choice for an immunity boosting recipe with all that vitamin C, so it makes for a perfect base to this recipe.

MY KITCHEN TOOLS FOR THIS RECIPE

To pack even more vitamin C and other immune boosting ingredients into this smoothie recipe, I did a little research on some natural ingredients. I’ve been recently reacquainted with my cookbooks as we are settling into our new house and could not believe the amount of smoothie knowledge that was inside the pages of Smoothie Project. If you like to make smoothies, you need this book. I learned so much and was able to narrow down a list of foods I felt would work well together and work to boost the immune system. Here’s what I came up with, and the benefits to the ingredients according to Smoothie Project.

Foods for Immunity Boosting Smoothie

Bee Pollen

Bee Pollen is a powerful immune booster, allergy reducer, protein packed, full of vitamin B, and contains almost all the nutrients humans require.

Almonds

Helps support the immune system, metabolism regulator, keeps that cholesterol low, full of dietary fiber and antioxidants, packed with vitamin E and riboflavin (a vitamin of the B complex).

Chia Seeds

Chia seeds are a complete protein source – helping you to stay full and out of the pantry during this social distancing period. Also contains tons of omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, minerals and antioxidants.

Collagen Peptides

This ingredient is also a good source of protein, but it’s main purpose is to promote healthy hair, skin and nails. And because those shops you frequent for upkeep in this department are closed, collagen peptides is an amazing ingredient to lean on until they reopen.

Ginger

Another great immune boosting ingredient. Ginger is also known for alleviating nausea, has anti-inflammatory properties, reduces muscle pain (for all those new at-home work outs we’re doing, wink wink), and aids in digestion.

Hemp Seeds

Great energy booster, helps keep you full for a longer period of time (great source of protein), and will help you sleep! All things I think we may need a little help with as we continue to social distance.

Turmeric

Supports brain health, joints and is an amazing immunity booster. Like ginger, you can use turmeric in the root form or in powder form for any immunity boosting smoothie.

An Easy to Make Smoothie Recipe

The biggest challenge with this recipe right now is access to ingredients. I was able to find bananas, carrots, oranges and fresh ginger root during my last grocery run, but I realize you may not have these items in your pantry right now. If you have orange juice but no oranges, use what you have instead of going to the store! If you do not have fresh ginger, substitute it for the powdered version. No powder? You have the option of ordering it online (link above) and still avoid making an unnecessary trip to the store.

Otherwise, if we were not in our current self-quarantine situation, this smoothie recipe is extremely easy to make. I love recipes where all the ingredients go into one pot – less mess. Throw everything into a blender or food processor, mix until smooth and enjoy!
