Autumn Sangria

A quick and easy cocktail recipe that’s perfect for a fall gathering, a Friendsgiving, or to serve at your Thanksgiving meal. Made with the combination of white wine and pear vodka, the alcohol is infused with the best fruit of the autumn harvest – grapes, apples, pears, plums and figs.

Ingredients

Units
  • 1 bottle sauvignon blanc
  • 1 bottle chardonnay
  • 1+1/2 cups pear vodka, I used the Wild Roots Spirits
  • 1/2 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 1+1/2 cups honey simple syrup
  • 2 thinly sliced apples
  • 2 thinly sliced red anjou pears
  • 2 thinly sliced green pears
  • 10 red grapes, sliced in half
  • 10 white grapes, sliced in half
  • 2 thinly sliced black plums
  • 2 thinly sliced red plums
  • 6 fresh figs, sliced in half

Instructions

  1. Pour the wine and the vodka into a very large pitcher, bowl or dispenser.
  2. Juice the lemon and orange and add it to the vessel, then stir in the honey simple syrup.
  3. Using a mandolin, slice the apples, pears, and plums. Add them to the vessel.
  4. Slice the grapes and figs in half and add them to the vessel.
  5. Give everything a good stir and place into the refrigerator for 4-6 hours, or overnight.
  6. Pour into glasses, garnish with freshly sliced fruit and enjoy.

Notes

You can omit or substitute any of the listed fruits with a different seasonal fruit of your choice, especially as items go out of season. Unflavored vodka would work as well, or substitute for an apple flavored vodka.

Recipe for Fall Sangria

I love how easy it is to change this recipe, especially if you like to shop for what’s in season. I browse the grocery story for the best looking fall fruits to incorporate into this cocktail. At the peak of the fall season it’s easy to find a variety of apples, pears, grapes and plums – all of which help create this dreamy concoction. However, if you can’t get your hands on one or two of these fruits, you can omit them and increase the quantity of the ones you can find.

To make this recipe for fall sangria, add the wine, vodka, honey simple syrup and the citrus juices to a large bowl or drink dispenser and give it a good stir. Using a mandolin, thinly slice the apples, pears and plums and add them to your vessel. Cut the grapes and the figs in half and add to the sangria. Chill for 4-6 hours, or overnight in the refrigerator.

Fall Sangria for a Crowd

I recently developed this recipe for a fall elopement that took place in the Big Horn Mountains of Wyoming. I featured an apple and acorn squash soup along with this sangria that was a hit. This cocktail is perfect for a small crowd and requires no attention after it’s made. I transported the fall sangria in a dispenser as we traveled up the mountain, and then transferred it over to a pitcher so that the bride, groom and their guests could fill their glasses as they pleased. Serve it however you like for you own fall gatherings.

Fall Sangria with White Wine

The last couple of sangria recipes I developed used white wine instead of red. I really like to highlight the fruity ingredients that go into flavoring a sangria, so the light, crisps attributes of white wine work really well. Because the fruit gives the drink tons of natural sweetness, I opt for wines that are on the drier side.

Flavored Vodka

Another ingredient you can easily substitute in this autumn sangria is the pear flavored vodka. It does add an extra layer of flavor, but unflavored vodka and apple vodka will also work well.
